Fridays with Matt: The Question That Changed My Life (And Might Change Yours Too)

You’ve probably heard of the book Tuesdays with Morrie.

For me… it was Fridays with Matt.

For a brief season of my life, I was given a gift I didn’t fully understand at the time—a front-row seat to the final chapter of a man who had truly understood what it's all about.

Matt was a successful businessman. Generous. Respected. But more than anything—he was a man of God.

Two men sit smiling on a park bench with a golden autumn backdrop. Text reads “Fridays with Matt.” Warm, friendly atmosphere.

When Health Fails, Priorities Become Clear

When I first met Matt, cancer had already taken hold.

Surgeries were behind him. Treatments were lined up. The medical system had a plan.

The prognosis wasn’t good.

And somehow, in the middle of all of that… he reached out to me.

A Chiropractor. A health advocate. A student of natural healing.

A man committed to helping people restore their health—not just cover up symptoms.

Because here’s what I’ve learned after years in this field:

If you never address the root cause… you never truly restore health.

Too often, the approach becomes managing disease rather than building health. And while there are times for intervention, we can’t ignore the reality:

A body burdened with stress, toxicity, and dysfunction doesn’t just need suppression—it needs restoration.

The Fridays That Weren’t About Him

For a number of Fridays, I would go to his home—a beautiful house on the lake.

I’d carry in my portable table and adjusting tools, ready to serve in whatever way I could.

Before we ever started, he would always ask me to pray.

“Pray for discernment.”

Not healing. Not outcomes.

Discernment.

That alone should’ve told me everything.

Matt was weak. In pain. Often drifting in and out from the weight of medication.

But those Fridays…

Weren’t about him.

He made them about me. And about the Lord.

The Goals We Think Matter

He would ask me about my goals.

My business. My family. My future.

And like most driven men, I had my answers ready:

“I want to see more patients.”“Grow the clinic.”“Make more money.”“Provide more for my family.”

On the surface—these are good things.

Respectable things.

Even justifiable things.

The Question That Stopped Me Cold

This went on for weeks.

Until one Friday changed everything.

I was sitting in his den—the one that had been turned into a bedroom so he didn’t have to climb the stairs anymore. The lake sat quietly just outside.

I was talking… probably about growth, expansion, the next level.

And through the haze of medication, Matt stopped me.

Looked right at me.

And asked:

“Yeah… but what are you doing for the Kingdom?”

I wanted to answer quickly—like I always did.

But this time… I couldn’t.

Because deep down—I knew.

That wasn’t the real answer.

The Question That Followed Me Home

When I left his house that day, that question didn’t leave me.

It followed me. It weighed on me.

It hit me like a s

lapshot to the chest:

What am I doing for the Kingdom?

Am I building something eternal…Or just building something for myself?

Am I truly serving God…Or just dressing up ambition in good intentions?

Matt passed away not long after that Friday.

But that question?

It’s still alive in me.

What Actually Matters in the End

Because at the end of it all—

When the titles are gone…When the accounts don’t matter…When the business stops growing…

There is only one thing that remains:

What did you do for the Kingdom?

Matt didn’t spend his final days talking about money.

Or success.Or achievements.

He talked about:

  • Purpose

  • Eternity

  • Alignment with God’s will

Why This Matters More Than You Think

Here’s the truth most people don’t want to face:

You can’t fully live out your God-given purpose…If your health is holding you back.

If you’re exhausted…Inflamed…Stressed…Dependent on medications just to function…

It becomes incredibly difficult to lead, serve, and show up the way you were created to.

Your body is not separate from your calling.

It’s the vessel that carries it out.

A Shift in How I Live and Serve

Because of Fridays with Matt, I see everything differently now.

I still serve people.I still build.I still work hard.

But now—

It’s not for me.

It’s for His glory.

“So whether you eat or drink or whatever you do, do it all for the glory of God.”— 1 Corinthians 10:31

A Question for You

Matt asked me a question that changed my life.

So now I’ll ask you:

What are you doing for the Kingdom?

And an even deeper question…

Are you physically able to?
